Do I really need to send Save The Dates?

Posted on

Save the Dates started to become popular in the mid 2000’s in the USA and have gradually made their way over to Irish shores since then.

They merely tell guests to keep the date of your wedding free and are usually sent out anytime from six months to one year before the wedding.

But, are Save The Dates really necessary? What do most Irish people do?

Save the Date etiquette in Ireland

From speaking to brides on a daily basis here at Love Letters Wedding Stationery, we have found the following to be true.

  • Some couples really don’t bother. They have always lived in the same location and regularly speak to or keep in touch with people who are invited to the wedding so everyone already knows. Word of the Mouth is usually what works for these couples. They normally just send the invitation about three - two months before the wedding so people can get organised.
  • Destination Wedding? If so, Save the Date cards are already part of the package. You should send these out at least one year in advance. People really appreciate if it if you give them as much notice as possible when booking flights and accommodation.
  • Getting married on an awkward day or peak date? If you happen to be planning to tie the knot midweek or on a busy bank holiday weekend, most couples tend to send Save The Dates. For obvious reasons, if your Wedding is on a Thursday you want to make sure everyone can take that day off work. Also, people tend to make plans for Bank Holiday weekends well in advance, so if your wedding day falls on one, make sure to send Save The Dates.
  • Low budget but want to do Save The Dates? Email Save The Dates, a wedding website or a Facebook page are your answer. These modern ways are becoming extremely popular and a lot of couples tend to go down one of these routes.
